101 Things in 1001 Days: v3 (2017-2020)

Round 3!  Here we go.

101 Things in 1001 Days (or Day Zero Project) is a simple list of tasks with a realistic deadline for completion.  Every item on the list is something I genuinely want to do, but perhaps wouldn’t get around to doing without the nudge of a ticking clock.  It’s like a bucket list, but better!

My new list began on Tuesday 20 June 2017, and will be completed by Tuesday 17 March 2020 (my 40th birthday).  I’ll be writing about my progress as I go, so please drop in and cheer me along.

101 Things in 1001 Days is the brainchild of Michael Green, a blogger and developer from NZ. He created a list of tasks to achieve within a defined period, and the idea quickly spread around the web as a tool for helping people accomplish their goals.

The mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The criteria: Tasks must be specific with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching.

Why 1001 days?  Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple challenges such as New Year’s resolutions or a ‘Bucket List’. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips, study semesters, or outdoor activities.

Donate money or time to help refugees and asylum seekers
There are very few issues more important, or urgent, as the rights of asylum seekers.
Donate blood
Only 1 in 30 Australians donate blood, but 1 in 3 of us will need donated blood in our lifetimes.
Donate 101 things (101/101)
The amount of “stuff” I have stresses me out.  Over the course of the next 2.75 years I bet I end up donating lots more than 101 things.
Repair something instead of taking it to a pro
I’m in a really time-poor period of my life and the temptation to send stuff away for repairs is pretty strong.  I’m going to use this as an opportunity to learn a new skill.
For one month, buy nothing new
Even if there’s a shoe sale.
For one week, don’t complain
Is this even possible?  I’m not sure, but I’m going to try.
Get my daily makeup routine down to 10 minutes
My mornings are chaotic, and I’d like to spend a bit less time in front of the mirror.  It would give me some freedom to feel like I could walk out the door in 10 minutes at any given moment.
Complete a short/online course in something new
I’m not sure if this will be something serious, or something crafty, but I love learning new things.
Learn how to count to 10 in ten languages
If I haven’t had my morning coffee I can barely do this in English.
Write to a politician about something I’m passionate about
Climate change?  Marriage equality?  Australia’s obligations under the UN Refugee Convention?  Maybe all of them.
011 Have a technology-free weekend
The last time I did this I created some good habits that I still carry years later.  But a few bad ones have crept back in, so it’s time to reset.
012 Put $x in a savings account every month (5/33)
In progress: I’ve set up a new account and an automatic transfer.
The amount I’ve chosen is a percentage of my salary, and I will adjust it over time.
013 Increase my income
Time to renegotiate my salary or find a new job.
   014 Update my resume
See above.
015 Write a manual for my job
Just in case I decide to go.

Walk 25km in one day
Send me your podcast recommendations.
Run a 5km fun run
I am weirdly excited about doing another fun run, even though I have maybe forgotten how to run.  I have lots of work to do.
Run 8km
I’ve never run 8km without stopping, so this is my first of two new distance goals.
Run 10km
This is the second of two new distance goals.
For one month, do a cardio class 3 days/week
Cardio classes aren’t really my thing, but they work.  This might force me to try some classes at my gym that I otherwise wouldn’t bother with.
For one month, do pilates or yoga 3 days/week
I would do this every day if I could.  This will be a great month!
For one month, swim 3 days/week
I’m not even sure if I own a swim suit.  It’s been a while.
For one month, use my TRX 5 days/week
Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I bought a TRX a year ago but never unpacked it.  It feels good to tell somebody – thank you for listening.
For one month, run 5 days/week
Short runs are totally fine.  The hardest part is putting your shoes on.
For one month, give up coffee
I can do this.  I can do this.  There may be homicides but I can do this.
026 For one month, give up added sugar
I can probably do this one without too much trouble.
027 For one month, give up added salt
This will be harder to give up than sugar.  Hold me.
028 Learn how to meditate
Are apps the way to go?  If you know of a good one, please tell me.
029 For one month, meditate every day
I just want to know if it’s as effective as people say.
030 For one month, make lunch for work every day
I used to do this all the time, and I’d like to get back into the habit.

Make a book of NYC photos
I need to go through photos from two separate trips.  Maybe two books?
Make a book of my 2014 USA trip
It’s going to be bittersweet to look back on the photos from this trip.  I don’t want to leave it much longer to make up a book, otherwise I might never do it.
Make a book of recipes
I have a plan.
Make a book of my black & white film photography
I’d like to do something with the huge stacks of photos I have stashed in drawers.
Simplify my audio/recording gear
In progress: I’m about halfway there. Live amplification sorted!
I have two aims here: to be able to flick a switch and play live, and to be able to record in 5 mins or less.
Learn to play a new instrument
I have a cello and guitars and no real idea how to play them.  Also if somebody gave me a clarinet I might learn that too?
Have my piano repaired and tuned
It’s mostly okay, but the practice pedal is busted and it hasn’t been tuned since its 2000km truck ride from Brisbane to Melbourne.
Record a song on the piano
Just piano, or piano and voice.
Record a song using three or more instruments
I kind of collect instruments that I don’t know how to play, so I have lots to choose from.
Record 5 cover songs (0/5)
I take requests.
Take 101 photographs on black & white film (0/101)
I’ve done this before, and had so much fun with it that I had to put it on this list too.
Redesign or update my art/photography portfolio website
I’m never going to pursue professional photography, but it’s nice to have a portfolio of the stuff I’m most proud of.
Invent and complete a photography project
Last time it was the alphabet series.  I’m still thinking up an idea for this round.
Make a ‘day in the life’ video
My phone pretty much always within reach on a normal day, so I’m going to take little bits of video for a day to show what life is like right now.
Make 10 time lapses (3/10)
I will never get tired of making or watching time lapses, especially skies.
Make an art time lapse
Remember this little face?  Time to make a new one.
Go to an art gallery and sketch
I’ve always been too self-conscious to sketch in public, but I think it’s a really great way to learn so I’ve decided to get over it.
Draw or paint 5 hands (0/5)
Draw or paint 5 faces (0/5)
Draw or paint 5 buildings (0/5)
Draw or paint 5 street scenes (0/5)
Draw or paint 5 figures (0/5)
Have an original painting framed
I have drawings and paintings in books, and a couple in cheap frames on my walls.  I’d like to have just one professionally framed.
Sew an item of clothing
For myself, for somebody else, doesn’t matter.
Finish my travel blanket
In progress: 29/78 patches sewn
I’ve started collecting patches from cities, countries and landmarks that I’ve visited throughout my life.  I’m maybe 20% through this little project and my aim is to finish it in the next 1001 days (and then keep adding to it for the rest of my life).
Put together an entire work outfit from an op shop (thrift store)
This challenge is partly creative, and partly a way to motivate me to get op shopping a little more regularly.  I am also mindful that some people have no other option.
Start a new journal and write at least once per month (2/33)
Gone are the days of daily journaling, but I bet I can manage to write something every month.
Make or build something fun from a kit
Maybe a Lego Tower Bridge?  A model ship?  This will be fun.
DIY something that I would normally go out and buy
Remember the time I made an iPhone dock out of wood, and then I ended up making about 10 more for my friends?  That was a fun experiment in figuring out how to DIY a product that I’d have happily paid for.  And I love mine even more because I made it.
060 Take one second of video every day for a year
I’m using the 1 Second Everyday app to make this happen.
Tackle a really challenging recipe
Can I out-do my rainbow layer cake?  We’ll find out.
Sell a painting or drawing
See something you like?  Hit me up!
063 Learn some basic calligraphy
When I grow up I want to be Kate Watson, but until then I just want to learn some of the ropes.
064 Make something out of clay
I have a little plan brewing.
065 Make somebody a birthday cake
If you didn’t blow out some candles, it wasn’t a birthday.

See the sun rise and set from a beach, on the same day
It doesn’t have to be the same beach.  I like the idea of starting on one side of the bay and finishing on the other.
Grow sunflowers
Because they make me happy.
Go horseriding
It’s going to be hard to beat my last horseriding experience on the beach!
Walk the 1,000 steps at Ferntree Gully
Is there beer at the top?  Please tell me there’s beer at the top.
Visit a town/city in Victoria I’ve never been to before
There’s a long list of places that I am yet to explore.
Visit the Northern Territory
This is the only Australian state/territory I haven’t visited and I’m really excited about finally completing the set!
Visit an international city I’ve never been to before
I can be in Wellington, NZ in 3.5 hours.  Or maybe I’ll get lucky and find the money to get to Europe.
Go camping
I keep putting this off because of my little dog, but I’m excited to make this happen somehow.
Go skinny dipping
Everybody should do this.
Watch an entire movie franchise in one weekend
I have a bunch of ideas: Harry Potter?  Star Wars?  Indiana Jones?  Recommend something (as long as it’s not Lord of the Rings)
Watch a multi-season TV series from start to finish
The Wonder Years?  I’m thinking of something seriously retro and maybe a little cringe-worthy.
See a landmark I’ve never seen before
Uluru would be pretty great, but if I’m forced to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower that’s probably also ok.
Go kayaking or canoeing
I think the last time I did this was on Year 9 camp.  Everyone got dysentery, it was great!
Go fishing
I was very short the last time I went fishing.
Swim in the ocean
I haven’t done this since the time I put this item on my last 101 Things list.  This time I’m going to find a warmer patch of ocean.
Sleep under the stars
Even if it has to be in my own backyard.
See a Melbourne Theatre Company production
I waste money on the dumbest stuff, but I have such a hangup about ticket prices.  So I’m going to go, and I will love it.
See some amateur theatre
Amateur anything is worth spending money on.  If you’re passionate enough to give up your spare time for your art, I want to be in the front row.  Take my money.
See a ballet
I haven’t seen a professional production since I was a kid.  I’m looking forward to this!
Pack a picnic and spend the day somewhere pretty.
There might also be a book or some paintbrushes?
Have a massage
It’s been on my “someday” list for years.  If it’s on my list, I’ve gotta make time for it.
Go to a local street festival
There are so many great festivals in my city to choose from.
See some live music on a school night
… and stop being so lame.
Go to a music festival or stadium concert
I talk myself out of spending big bucks when the tickets go on sale, and later I regret it.  So I’m giving myself permission to splurge on at least one kickass gig or festival in the next 1001 days.
Read an entire book in a day
I do this maybe once per year, and every time it feels like the biggest luxury.
Read 5 books by female Australian authors
Here is what a bookshop would look like with no male authors.
Read 5 books by refugees
Nam Le’s collection of short stories, The Boat, made me want to learn so much more from the experiences of refugees.
Ask 20 people to recommend a book, and read them all (1/20)
In progress: 1. Jitterbug Perfume – Tom Robbins (Adam)
I’ll be asking friends and colleagues mostly, because I am interested to see how well my own people know me and my tastes.  However, if there’s a book I absolutely need to read please tell me!
Find a great Ethiopian restaurant
Mmmm… injera.
Visit 5 different art galleries (0/5)
Commit a random act of kindness
It will be secret and anonymous, but I hope to quietly make somebody’s day.
Commission a piece of art
I love the idea of supporting an artist, and owning a personalised piece.  I’ve wanted to do this for years!
Have a Melbourne staycation
I want to spend a weekend being a tourist in my own city.  I’m going to draw up an itinerary as though I have a Sunday evening flight and cram in as much of the city as I can.
Stay in a really unusual AirBNB
Like, maybe a houseboat.  Yeah!
Try something that scares me
Ughhhhh I bet this ends up involving heights or spiders 🙁

Save $15 per month to put towards a fun reward at the end! (5/33)
In progress: I’ve set up a new account and an automatic transfer.
