101 Things in 1001 Days

November 27th, 2007

I don’t believe in New Years Resolutions. In the past I’ve made all these promises to myself about my health and lifestyle, but that time of year is just too big a party season to ever see them through. Is January 1st really the day to stop eating deep-fried food, when you’re suffering the hangover from hell? Nuh uh.

And anyway, year-long goals are good for some short term stuff, but how many of us can say “I’m going buy a round-the-world ticket this year and visit all the major capitals”, and then just do it? Now that my life has a little more medium-term direction, I’m more interested in mapping out those big plans and slotting in the smaller ones around them.

And so, beginning on January 1st (but only because I like clean slates), I will be starting my new 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge. It is a list of tasks that I actually want to complete, with a goal date of September 28th, 2010. That’s almost 2.75 years from now, which is plenty of time to coordinate some of the bigger challenges that I have set for myself. And none of the diet-related ones need to begin straight away!

My list isn’t complete yet, but I have all of December to get it ready. I’m really excited about some of the tasks I’ve set for myself, especially my travel plans and going on a hot air balloon for the first time. It all seems very achievable in 1001 days.

So check out my list, and let me know if you have any suggestions!

I love this idea! LOL at learn the world capitals – I did this in the early 90s – boy was I a pain at dinner parties! anyway, then of course the Iron Curtin fell, the Soviet Union fragmented, Yugoslavia imploded and I had a whole heap more to learn.

So I would have to add this one to my list too.

I came up with a few ideas and then realised, maybe I should do this myself! I can well believe that just making up the list is reason enough to feel satisfied. Crossing off items even more. Finishing everything… can’t even imagine what that would feel like.

Wow! That’s a really good idea! That’s so much better then NYResolutions. How I hate them :]

Let’s catch up for a drink when you visit Tasmania!

In 1001 days, maybe you could learn a language to a degree of fluency? Say, enough to pass a pre-tertiary course in it?

Do not add ‘Have a baby’ to the list, unless you don’t want to achieve any of the other 1000 goals.

You doing anything that involved “premeditation” makes me a little nervous but still a great idea. Don’t know where it will fit by maybe something like a financial goal (spot the accountant’s daughter!). I also seem to remember this from a while back and there were some music ones in there… And I like Stella’s idea of a language – maybe start with the swear words, or 5 phrases in 5 different languages…

Are these headings you’ve made yourself or from the originally blogger?

It’s got me thinking about my own list.

Cellobella – I need you on my team next time I’m playing Trivial Pursuit!

lilalia – When you’ve made your list, I hope you’ll come back and share it with us! I need a 1001 days buddy.

Stella – I love it. I’m not sure what level of fluency you’re talking about, but I’m going to investigate it. Perhaps I’ll start by brushing up on my Japanese, it’s only been 10 years!

Sal – Don’t be scared, you’re a little too far away for me to do anything too nasty! Although you WERE my partner in crime in that little stuffed frog kidnapping fiasco of 1998! You’re probably right about me making some financial goals, but it’s hard to put figures on things when my working situation is this unstable. I’ll give it some thought.

You made me consider an interesting question though – do I still need to contribute to the swear jar if I’m swearing in another language? ;)

(PS: These are my own headers, they just helped me to categorize my goals for the sake of organisation. Click on the link to see the other guy’s list – it’s pretty ambitious)
