I was looking around google at all the places “AJAXed WordPress” appeared and I re-found your website. Since you last tested AWP, it has advanced rather quickly in functionality. (You would have to enable "hide comment children" and set the "depth" to 1.) If you are looking for threaded comments like email list-servs, aWP doesn't do that. Yet. As for the styling, aWP uses template files that you can edit and basically copy and paste your theme's template into (in pieces.)
