Two milestones!

Elizabeth March 18th, 2008

I began a mildly fanatical exercise and diet regime at the beginning of February, as part of my 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge. Since then I’ve lost a bunch of weight and am feeling a million bucks.

Writing about my weight here feels a bit strange, to be honest, because it’s a fairly private thing for me. But in the spirit of tracking my progress, I think it’s important to make mention of two big milestones!

Firstly, yesterday I went clothes shopping. It’s something that I did out of necessity, because the best-fitting work skirt I own is at least one size too big for me. I really resent spending money on clothes right now because I still have weight to lose, but it had reached the point where wearing this skirt wasn’t even an option anymore.

The skirt I bought is a cute little number from Portmans, TWO SIZES smaller than the skirts I was buying there 6 weeks ago! I’m wearing it today, and it’s pretty fabulous.

Secondly, and this is even more impressive…

I have taken ownership of my skinny boyfriend’s cargo shorts because THEY FIT ME and I want them so he’s lost them. Words cannot explain the moment when I tried them on and they looked good!

(I told Tim that if he said ONE WORD about those shorts being big on him I would break his nose. So far he hasn’t!)

I have been tempted to start a 101 things in 1001 days (not sure if I can come up with 101 thing though) and weight loss will be on the top of my life.
Sounds like you are doing great on your weight loss. Keep the good work up. I’ve only lost 7 lbs since I have tried loosing weight a month and 1/2 ago. I need to work a lot harder.
Have you thought about buying clothes at Goodwill or something? That’s what I plan to do since I don’t want to spend too much money on clothes that will be too big on me later.

Lulu: I’m not sure how wise it is to begin your challenge on April Fools Day, but good luck anyway! Don’t forget to put plenty of easy-to-finish items on your list and make all your goals very specific – there’s nothing worse than not knowing exactly when to cross it off.

As for weight loss, I made a few big changes initially that I’ve since made habit. I took a month off chocolate altogether, gradually reduced salt and sugar, and thought long and hard about carbs. While I don’t believe in cutting them out completely, I found that I was often just eating them out of habit. Plan every meal around veggies first, then add protein, and then a small amount of carbs. I think I had that upside down until I re-examined things.

Most days I’ll have a sandwich with 2 pieces of bread, OR toast for breakfast – never both. I eat a lot of steamed veggies and salads, upped the legumes and eat a variety of nuts and fruit for snacks. Although most nuts are high in fat, it’s the good kind!

Remember to keep up your calcium, as that seems to be a commonly missed ingredient when we diet. It’s too important to ignore.

As for exercise, do as much as you can – whenever you have time! Before I was working fulltime I set myself a challenge to walk to the city and home a few times a week, and that really kickstarted things for me. Once my general fitness improved a little (it doesn’t take long to notice a difference) I began the “Couch to 5k” running program at Coolrunning. I plan to write a post about it soon, so look out for it. Aside from that I also use my basic little stepper machine in front of the TV, and am beginning strength exercises.

I know it’s nothing revolutionary, but I hope these tips help!

Charlene: Good luck with your goal! I try not to talk about my weight loss in public too much, because I don’t want my blog to become ALL about me, but I think it’s important to document the important stuff!

Thanks for the suggestion to look for clothes at op shops, I hadn’t really gone down that road. I tend to look there for retro/vintage stuff… it didn’t occur to me to look for work clothes! I’ll have to find some places near me and dedicate a day to it – it’s just a shame that you have to dig through so much junk to find anything decent!
