Lunch Bag Art

November 23rd, 2008

Lunch Bag Art is the blog of some dad, somewhere, who spends his lunch breaks drawing on paper bags for his kids’ lunches.

How cool is that? Wish there was more info about him somewhere.

I discovered a cute online store tonight, via the ever-awesome Swiss Miss. The only downside is that they are based in the US and don’t ship internationally, so I am forced to simply drool through my monitor.

Here are some favourites:

In / Out / Limbo file folder set. I would LOVE these for my office at work, which I am currently trying to transform into a place I’d like to spend every day in. You know, since I have to.

Bookworm bookmarks – pretty much the cutest bookmarks I’ve ever seen.

500XL GIANT earbud speakers. I’m surprised how tasteful these actually look in action – normally I can’t deal with an idea this tacky!

When will online retailers learn that there is a whole world outside of US borders? Urban Outfitters, I’m looking at you too.

This video is mesmerizing, and I could watch it all day.

Mind you, I have taken a fairly serious amount of cold & flu medication today. Could there be a connection?

Bird in my backyard, October 2008.

Strange coincidence…

Yesterday’s Daily Photo was a picture of a hot air balloon, taken a few years ago as it cruised above my old house in Brisbane.

Today I was brushing my teeth at about 6am when I heard a strange noise. I looked out of my bathroom window to see an enormous balloon rising up from behind the trees in my yard, like a huge yellow sun. Of course, I woke everyone in the house and we all stood out the back to ooh and ahh. And then Tim went back to bed.

There were 5 or 6 balloons, and some of them were directly overhead (and REALLY low). I was mesmerised for so long that for a while there I forgot I had a camera!

But then I grabbed it, and took these shots:

Pretty pretty. I cannot wait to do this myself sometime. Thanks to my 101 Things in 1001 Days list I should be doing it sometime in the next 18 months!

My old suburb of Ashgrove, on a calmer day than today.

Hang in there, Brisbane.

November 20th, 2008

Back in my home town of Brisbane, Armageddon has arrived. It would seem that mother nature’s answer to a decade of drought is to pummel the city with storms that rip trees out of the ground and throw them on peoples’ rooftops. My old suburb of Ashgrove is one area experiencing flash flooding, although my parents’ house is high and dry on a hill.

More storms are expected tonight, and an even bigger one tomorrow night. It must be completely heartbreaking for the many people who have lost everything.

At least these guys had fun with it. Secretly, I’d have loved to have experienced it too – as long as I came out the other side with everything intact!

Planet Earth is so cranky with us right now. Or maybe it’s the Big Guy sending us a message? After all, Victoria is facing a threat of locust plagues right now…

It’s all a little too Biblical for me. So instead, I’d like to close with this little piece of advice for my Brisbane friends and family:

I am the most boring person you know.

I am now chain-yawning to the point where I cannot see my screen, so it’s lucky I can touch type. After I hit ‘publish’ I’m going to go stand under the shower for a few minutes, and then fall into bed.

I would like to fast-forward to the point where my big work deadline has been met, and I have regained the will to live.

Tell me something good!

Goodbye, pretty tree.

November 18th, 2008

A long exposure of the beautiful tree in my backyard, taken earlier this year when I slept under the stars. Today it was reduced to a pile of firewood and saw dust.

Our tree was the tallest in the area, and was home to lots of birds, possums and bats. We’ve also lost our main source of shade, which often extended right into our living room.

Very cranky with our landlord, and our agent for not bothering to call us.

People are crap.

Massive day, I’m beat. Can’t wait to fall into bed. I suspect I’ll be there before 9pm.

While I’m gone, tell me about your favourite Melbourne author! I need to find a new locally-written novel to read on the tram, and I need suggestions. Bonus points if the story is set in Melbourne.

Here’s one from me: Seven Types of Ambiguity by Elliot Perlman. I was HOOKED.
