#36 – Visit 5 different Melbourne markets

November 16th, 2008

Camberwell Markets, September 2008.

Part of my 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge.

This was such an easy task to complete that I feel slightly guilty even having it on my list. But not quite as guilty as I feel for taking 11 months to complete it!

QV Markets

I have been to the Queen Victoria Markets several times over the course of this challenge – in fact, as recently as yesterday! I particularly like these markets in Winter, when I can take my time coming home with my nanna trolley without worrying about the meat deteriorating. I like stocking up on fish once a month, and usually replenish my supplies of raw almonds and gourmet sausages.

Looking forward to the night markets starting up at the end of this month. It’s been too long since my last injera from the Ethiopian stall.

Richmond Markets

This fresh produce market is closer to my house, so I’ll probably be seeing more of it now that the weather is heating up. It can be hard work battling the crowds there, but the freshness and value is undeniable. And although I sometimes complain about it, I think it’s good that they close at midday on Saturday so that you’re forced to get there, get out, and get on with the rest of your weekend.

Camberwell Markets

Camberwell has fresh produce markets throughout the week, but it is best known for its Sunday bric-a-brac market. I have only been here once so far, but made an absolute KILLING. I looked a little bit ridiculous carrying 3 vases, jewellery, a CD and FURNITURE home on the tram, but it was totally worth it. I would like to check out these markets more often.

Prahran Markets

The Prahran markets are walking distance from where I work, and they’re pretty special. As well as having top-grade fresh produce there’s also a great meat & fish section, and The Essential Ingredient right next door. It’s pretty easy to get inspired there.

These markets close at 5pm, so getting there after work is out of the question. And my lunch break isn’t really long enough to make the most of them. However, I’ve just noticed on their website that they open at dawn on weekdays, so maybe I’ll do my shopping early and stow it all in the fridge at work…

St Kilda Markets

It’s a Really Big Deal for me to go to a market and not buy anything, but that’s what happened today. I really enjoyed my time at the St Kilda market, and thoroughly recommend them, but I just didn’t find anything that I needed to own. Well, except for some particularly spectacular artwork that I would have adored, but they were really pricey.

Overall I found these markets to be a bit too touristy. High quality, but tacky. I got far more from the experience of wandering along the Esplanade and breathing in the sea air than I did from the merchandise on offer, but it was still really interesting to see. And besides, I made up for it on Acland St with a haircut and a pretty green amethyst ring!

Looking forward to checking out the St Kilda night markets, now that I know they exist.

Baby Gets Crowd Pumped

November 15th, 2008

You could be forgiven for thinking that today’s video is a total blogging cop-out.

You would only be half-right.

While I don’t have much to write about today, I genuinely laughed my ass off at this video today and wanted to share it with everyone! I especially loved the commentary that went with it at Today’s Big Thing:

Phillies fans at the World Series Parade decided to give this kid the most exciting day of his life. Every time he raises his arms, they cheer. He’s going to be really disappointed when he realizes he’s not a king or some kind of wizard.

Love it.

And since I am now addicted to this stupid website, here’s another one.

(If you read my site via an RSS reader, you’re gonna have to click through to see the vids. Sorry ’bout that. It’s worth it.)

I’ve always been proud of this shot. I love putting it in front of people and watching their expression change when they finally notice what’s in the background!

Funky Fresh Sr Choir

November 14th, 2008

Straight outta the retirement home, the Funky Fresh Senior Choir is here to tear down the house – in between naps of course. They cover a variety of hip-hop acts, including Nelly, Outkast and Chamillionaire.

This is funnier if you don’t concentrate on how sad a person that conductor must be. He needs some serious therapy for his ‘former child star’ syndrome.

Dog Malfunction

November 14th, 2008

Sometimes my dog is really stupid. Last night we had heaps of thunder, and Harry was a total wreck. We felt sorry for him, but there’s only so much you can do when your stressed-out dog just CANNOT be helped. In the end we had to endure him following us at a distance of 10cm, refusing to drink, refusing to pee, and whining.

I’m pretty used to this by now, but Tim has only been a pet owner for 14 months. At times like this he asks me why our dog is broken.

That’s why it was funny when Tim emailed me this morning with a link to this video, and the note: “All things considered, we are pretty lucky.”

“Elden” – a handsome boy who used to visit me in Connecticut.

Oh, hi!

November 13th, 2008

I know my posts have been a little lightweight for the past few days. For some reason I have been sleeping badly all week, and although I’m falling into bed at the first available opportunity I’m just not rested when I wake up. It doesn’t help that I’m completely under the pump at work, and really need all my remaining brainpower to keep my head above water there.

Somehow, despite being the “new kid” at work, I have become the go-to person for every question under the sun. I am secretly pleased with myself for being able to dig up the answers 99% of the time, but I could really do without the constant tests!

I am considering learning to juggle. My boss told me today that I don’t need lessons.

Life is good, it’s just that my resources are a little bit stretched. And that doesn’t seem to make for particularly inspired blogging. I thought it might help to put that in writing, so that you know that I know. Y’know?

Tomorrow is Friday. My dad is coming to stay with us for a couple of days while he’s in between conferences, and we’ll see him for another few days next week too. Rather than attempting that awkward, “Dad? This is my blog…” conversation, I imagine I’ll continue to be brief on the days he’s here!

I’ll continue to update in some form every day, so keep dropping in. Meanwhile, if you have an interesting link to share, leave me a comment!

I just love hearing it.

November 13th, 2008

One sunny day in January 2009 an old man approached the white house from across Pennsylvania Ave where he had been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said “I would like to go and meet President Bush.” The Marine looked at the old man and replied “Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer lives here.” The old man says “OK” and walks away.

The next day the same old man walks across and asks the same Marine the same question and the Marine a bit irritated gives the same reply and the old man walks away.

On the third day the same old man comes again and asks the same Marine ” I would like to go in and meet president Bush.” Now the marine is even more irritated at the man and says “I told you yesterday and the day before that Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer lives here. Don’t you understand?”

The old man looked at the Marine and said “I understand. I just love hearing it.”

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted and said “See you tomorrow sir.”

Daily Photo: Jack is six!

November 12th, 2008

This gorgeous kid turned six today, and I’m sad I wasn’t up in Brisbane to wish him a happy birthday in person. I love this photo, taken when he was about 3 years old in King George Square. Such a poser.

Happy birthday, kiddo! I love you lots, and can’t wait to see you again soon. Bring your mum down to Melbourne for a holiday soon, ok?

Love, tickles and cuddles,
“Arnie Liz” xxx

Madonna has lost her mind.

November 12th, 2008

After weeks of separation, Guy Ritchie has finally been reunited with his boys – but not without a long list of demands from his psycho ex. All evidence points to the fact that Madonna’s brain has short-circuited, resulting in this list.

The rules include:

- The children be able to talk to Madonna by phone three or four times a day at times set by her
- The couple’s separation not be discussed with the children
- The children be prevented from looking at newspapers, magazines, TV or DVDs
- They must only eat macrobiotic, vegetarian food with no processed or refined food
- Any water they drink, even if used to dilute organic juice, had to be Kabbalah water
- They only wear clothes sent by Madonna, but if something had to be bought, it should not contain man-made fibres
- They should not be bought any toys that are “spiritually or ethically unsound”
- Their hands must be regularly cleaned with disinfectant
- They must not to be photographed while with Ritchie or see his friends, particularly female ones
- At bedtime, Ritchie must only read The English Roses, a series of children’s books written by Madonna about “the five most fab young lasses in London”

If you can stomach any more of this, head to The Age.

I’d find this funny if it wasn’t so hypocritical. Thumbs down.

One of Steve Irwin’s beloved elephants. Australia Zoo.

Hello, beautiful.

November 10th, 2008

As part of this NaBloPoMo business I had every intention of writing a position statement about the plight of the modern-day goat and his struggle for recognition in a sea of aesthetically superior beasts.

Now I feel terribly embarrassed. Clearly they are not as marginalized as I thought.

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you The “Most Beautiful Goat” competition.

I wonder if this competition was held directly after the “Most Chuggable Beer” competition? It would make sense that the same judges adjudicated both events.

Thanks to Sally for the link (now write your bloody thesis!)
