I’m an Apple baby.

Elizabeth July 19th, 2009

Last Thursday afternoon our phone carrier emailed us a special promotion to upgrade to the iphone. It was a one-night-only deal for existing customers, and was so impressive that we signed up on the spot. Tomorrow our two beauties will be delivered to me at work, and I may or may not give one of them to Tim!

We were pretty happy to be offered the deal, because we’re still a long way off from finishing our original 24-month plans. I managed to negotiate a brand new contract that costs the same as we’re already paying – even including the cost of the iphone installments. The data and call package is brilliant, and we’re not spending anything extra!

So naturally I have spent the entire weekend browsing the iTunes store for apps. I’m pretty excited about Cellar by Airsource, which catalogs your wine collection by brand, region, vintage, grape, price and rating. When you drink a bottle, either delete it from your collection or move it to the ‘Garage’ so that you can remember it later. How great will this be next time I’m at Dan Murphys, and blinded by all the pretty labels?

I’m hoping that the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion app will be a great companion to Cellar, and that the Couch to 5k app will help me to work off all the damage caused by the first two!

I’ve downloaded a stack of apps for somebody who doesn’t even have her iphone yet. However, I need a little help identifying which apps are “essentials”, as iphones weren’t even on my radar 3 days ago! If you have an app that you love, leave me a comment!

I can’t wait to add this phone to my little collection of Apple devices. One more sleep…

Check out the free Assassin’s Creed game; BOMRadar for weather; Google Earth is cool on the iPhone; I use “Notebooks” for my note taking; OmniFocus is a must for me, in conjunction with my Mac Desktop though… ; Stanza is fantastic, particularly if you have public transport time; TweetDeck for your twitter needs; and there are of course a variety of LiveJournal, flickr, wordpress, etc apps to explore.

Oh, and I nearly forgot Shazam and WhatTheFont for detecting music and fonts…

Metlink Melb & Yarra Trams are great for Melbourne Public Transport. Yarra Trams is awesome – for every stop it tells you how far away the tram is. Like the PID displays at major stops.
    Tweet Deck – twitter ap
    Shazam – Music identifier
Unblock Me Free (addictive) – block moving game.
    ShopShop – Shopping list app
    Paper Toss – Game
eBuddy – Chat app that includes MSN/google talk/etc
Bubblewrap – highly addictive game that simluates popping bubble wrap

They’re all free ones that I use the most.

    I did purchase
    Bejewelled (great for the tram)
Pocket Weather AU (better than the free ap that comes with it)

There are a few others that I have but don’t tend to use them as much.

The best part of the iPhone is downloading and testing them yourself :)

I vowed never to buy an app, but that was before I discovered Bejewelled and Tweetie! I also love Road Trip Lite which tracks fuel consumption; Pocket Cinema (for Greater Union); iFractal (for some mindless stuff!); Tripit and have a free Sudoku which I have been playing a bit!

A trick I found if you want to move apps between screens, put one of the apps in the bottom bar on the last page and the one you want to move in the bottom bar- makes it so much easier to move rather than trying to flick through pages. Then move the bottom bar back to the way you like it!
