2010 Calendar by vanhoosedesign

Elizabeth September 30th, 2009

calendar

I love this beautiful wall calendar, by vanhoosedesign at Etsy. I especially think it would be terrific for marking off the days that I go for a run, due to the great linear layout.

I was all set to buy it for myself when I realised that the colour scheme is totally aimed at the Northern hemisphere. I’m sure it’s not that big a deal, but now that I’ve noticed all the warm colours in the middle of the year I think it would bug me every time I looked at it!

Maybe I should think of it as a reminder to turn the heater on in Winter, and the aircon in Summer? Sure, that’ll do!

Thanks to Nicole Hill Gerulat for sharing.

Oye Modern

Elizabeth September 30th, 2009

I get pretty excited whenever I receive my email from Missy Confidential, alerting me to the latest sales in my city.  I tend not to go out of my way to go to the physical stores, but their online sales section makes me weak at the knees.  See, I wasn’t kidding when I said that online shopping has changed my life!

Today’s edition introduced me to a jewellery store that I hadn’t seen before - Oye Modern. It features pieces from emerging and independent designers, and a lot of their stuff is fun and quirky.

Love these headphone pieces, especially!

Headphone Ring, Darkcloud Silver – also available in a pendant.

The more I dig around this site, the better it gets. Here are a few more of my favs:

Cute, right? I usually wear classic (boring) pieces, but these really appeal to me.

Right now they’re offering free worldwide shipping, for a limited time.

5 Great Aussie online stores

Elizabeth September 28th, 2009

The other day I wrote about the 30 presents I bought for Tim’s birthday this year, and that I found most of his presents online. A bunch of my coworkers were amazed that I knew where to find some of that stuff, and some were even a bit shocked that I was comfortable using my credit card online to pay for it.

It made me realise how much online shopping has transformed the way I shop, and how many people are yet to embrace this modern-day advancement!

Some of my favourite US-based stores still don’t deliver to Australia (are you listening, Urban Outfitters? Anthropologie?), and others charge far too much to ship here (American Eagle, I’m looking RIGHT at you).

This post focuses on Australian and NZ online stores. Later on I’ll write about the many US stores who have taken the time to calculate the true cost of shipping to Australia.

Here it is – enjoy!

fishpond

#1: FISHPOND – Books, music, movies and games
Fishpond.com.au is Australia’s answer to Amazon, providing an enormous range of books, music, movies and games to the Australasian region at the best possible price. Fishpond guarantees that its prices are lower than Amazon’s, and as they are based in NZ they don’t have to charge GST. How good is that?

peters

#2: PETER’S OF KENSINGTON – Homewares, Cookware, Glassware, Collectables (etc)
Peter’s of Kensington is a Sydney institution, and in 2000 they launched the online branch of their store. I’ve bought a mountain of great stuff from Peter’s – everything from my coffee machine, to my Global knives and my incredible Jamie Oliver Tefal frypan. I’ve spent a lot of money there, but the savings are so massive that it’s all been worth it.

They stock major brands, making it easy to “window shop” at a physical store if you ever want to see the item before purchasing it, and shipping is lightening fast and very inexpensive.

(Plus, I actually look forward to my weekly email full of specials!)

coles

#3: COLES ONLINE – Groceries
You might be surprised to see a grocery store on my list, but Coles Online is the reason that I was able to survive in Melbourne without a car for as long as I did. I’ve never been good at buying a carry-bag of groceries every few days, preferring to do one major shop every couple of weeks, and discovering Coles was the answer to all my prayers.

Now that I have a car, Coles is no longer my supermarket of choice. However, there is no denying that they do online groceries better than anybody else in the market right now. I’m sure that shopping this way helped me to save money too, as it was simple to sort items by unit price and identify which brand was the best value. Better still, they regularly throw in a bag of sample products – one week it was three cartons of rice milk, another time it was a couple of big bags of dog food.

biscote

#4: BISCOTE – Womens clothing
Biscote is a store that I have purchased from many, many times. I find their range of clothing to be really inconsistent, and much of it doesn’t interest me, but I’ve found it to be really good for basics.

You can’t argue with their prices, or the reasonable shipping costs, and that’s what brings me back time after time. I’ve bought a couple of great winter coats for under $30, and several marino wool knits for work that are Country Road quality (at a fraction of the price). I only wish that they would update their range more regularly, as about half of the items in their store were there 18 months ago when I first discovered it!

Their returns policy is fantastic, shipping is as fast as it gets, and I’ve found the customer service to be impeccable. Just take your time and pick through their offerings, and you’ll find some terrific gear. Their Hawthorn store feels more like an office, but it is worth dropping in there for more bargains if you live in Melbourne.

redballoon

#5: RED BALLOON DAYS – Experiences, gifts
Red Balloon Days is a place you want to know about, if you want to find a gift that’s out of the ordinary. They specialise in “experiences” like hot air ballooning, rally car driving, spa packages and getaways. They also have an interesting range of gift boxes.

It’s always best to compare their prices with other sites like Wishlist.com.au

That’s Noice is another great resource for Aussies, as they regularly review websites and products that cater to the Australian market.

One year to go: 101 Things in 1001 Days

Elizabeth September 28th, 2009

My 101 Things in 1001 Days list features pretty heavily on this blog, but I find it difficult to report back on every completed task. I’m not sure that I can expect you to care that I have had my couches steam-cleaned, or that I’ve finished another book by a Melbourne author. I may not always write about it, but I am quietly getting stuff done in the background!

But not quickly enough! Today marks the final 365 days of my challenge, and I still have a long way to go. Here’s where I’m up to now:

progress2

I’m really happy to be past the half-way mark, but a bit concerned about the rate at which I need to complete them in order to finish my list on time. On the other hand, I’ve already made good progress on another 22% of tasks, so that should help me to rack up some more red boxes!

I really can’t recommend this challenge highly enough. Since January 1st 2008 I have managed to do the following – all thanks to my list!

  • I gave up chocolate for a month. Madness.
  • I have developed a more sophisticated interest in wine, and discovered how lucky I am to live in such a great wine region
  • I’ve given blood for the first time, and renewed my Senior First Aid certificate
  • I’ve kept a swear jar, learned a few constellations and all the US state capitals
  • I’ve sponsored a beautiful kid in Ecuador, and already learned so much through letters from her family
  • I’ve slept under the stars, carved my first Halloween pumpkin and executed an amusing prank
  • I’ve improved a bunch of the “stuff” I own – bought a car, beautiful new knives, the perfect coffee table, the Mac of my dreams, a couple of new camera lenses, a new bed and a BBQ. And yes, I had my couches steam cleaned.
  • I’ve challenged myself to draw every day for a month, to draw everything I ate for one week, and to take a list of 100 words and turn them into 100 snapshots.

I suppose I might have bought some of the stuff on my wishlist, but otherwise I’m not sure I’d have ever gotten around to doing the stuff listed above. It’s really cool that I’ve been able to set aside the time to make it all happen.

The next 12 months will bring some big adventures, as I seem to have left some of the more major tasks until last! This time next year, I will have:

    • done the Couch to 5k program, and reached my goal weight
    • learned 30 of recipes from around the world
    • taken a flight in a hot air balloon
    • sorted out my money stuff
    • been horseriding
    • learned some sign language
    • finally seen the Great Ocean Road, and booked a trip to the US
    • been on a ghost tour, and the Neighbours tour!
    • created a book of my photography

And plenty more! I have a great year ahead.

Best of luck to all those who are doing this challenge, especially those who began around the same time as me. I’d love to check out your list if I haven’t already seen it!

    What’s going on here?

    Elizabeth September 27th, 2009

I love Lee Lin Ching. She’s probably the most intense newsreader you’ll ever see, and she rocks colourful glasses like nobody else on Earth.

But, uh… what’s this all about?

    leelinchin

I know we’re in a drought, but are we all expected to have rain catchment devices installed on our clothing? Did she lose a bet with Mugatu?

    Or are they wings?

Is she really a Transformer, who has malfunctioned mid-show?

I have run out of questions. It is time for answers, Lee Lin Ching.

#95 – Knit or sew something

    Elizabeth September 27th, 2009

Part of my 101 Things in 1001 Days challenge.

Originally, task #95 was “Knit something”. A few years ago I taught myself how to knit scarves, and have since made several in different styles. They’re great, but there comes a point in a girl’s life where she really doesn’t need another scarf!

My plan was to teach myself to knit something different, but for the last couple of years knitting has kind of dropped off my radar. I still appreciate hand-knitted items, but just lack the will to do it myself. In the spirit of my 101-list philosophy I decided to replace it with something equally challenging.

    missbuttons

Last year I sewed this Miss Buttons doll, after coming across a cute little kit in the NGV. I have since bought several other kits and mailed them off around the world, as I think they are adorable!

I didn’t feel right submitting this as my “sew something”, considering that I made her before changing the goal-posts of my task. So instead, I found another project that I’ve always wanted to make – a sock monkey! Here he is, posing with Harry (who may have already tried to stake a claim on him…)

    sockmonkey

    sockmonkeymissbuttons

They’re a funny-looking pair, but they make me smile!

We think the monkey’s name might be Diego, but not sure about the doll. Suggestions are gratefully received.

    Bugs

    Elizabeth September 24th, 2009

This morning I set out to cross a few more words off my 100 Snapshots list. I’m really not sure if I’ll take all 100 photos, but it’s been a brilliant exercise in looking at the world around me in new ways. I’m over halfway through!

I came across these weird infestations of bugs in my backyard during my search for photos. They ended up making some beautiful shots.

    bugs1

    bugs2

    weed

Can anyone tell me what they are? Unless I discover that they’re somehow good for my garden, they’re on their way to insect heaven…

    Tim’s birthday (Part 3)

    Elizabeth September 16th, 2009

    t30

It’s here – the third and final installment of the Festival of Tim’s 30th Birthday! You can read the other parts of the story here:

    Part 1
    Part 2

I began working on Tim’s birthday presents months before the big event. I got a little carried away with the round-number birthday and decided that he would need 30 presents to mark the occasion. It didn’t sound like a big deal when I began, but it was really hard to get so many presents that he would genuinely enjoy!

I did a lot of my shopping online, and had everything delivered to work so that they were away from prying eyes. By the time everything had arrived I had the beginnings of my own shop front!

    06. Lunch at Skillogalee
    07. Dinner on the Restaurant Tram

    10. Movie vouchers
    11. The Culture Secrets: Melbourne card pack

    28. A mag light
    29. An Eckersleys voucher, for art supplies
    30. A short course in drawing at Swinburne University, and a miniature painting

It took him about an hour and a half to unwrap everything, and by the end there was an endless sea of paper and ribbon all over the floor. It was a great way to end the birthday weekend.

Plus, it was nice to be able to do this for him now – you know, before the arthritis sets in!

(For Christmas, Tim is getting a card.)

    National Blood Donor Week

    Elizabeth September 9th, 2009

I’m not usually in the habit of copying & pasting other people’s posts outright, but when I saw this post by Leigh from That’s Noice I wanted to do my part to spread the message. It’s an issue close to my heart.

To coincide with the 80th anniversary of blood collection services in Australia, the Federal Government has designated 2009 the Year of the Blood Donor.

This week is National Blood Donor Week, an opportunity to showcase and recognise the Millions of special donors all over the world and hear from the people whose lives are transformed by their generosity.

    RDC_DE1b_2009.logo_FA

    Did you know?
    • One in three Australians will need blood at some stage during their lifetime – but only one in 30 currently give it

    • Australia needs 21,000 blood donations per week to ensure there are adequate supplies for those people who need it

    • Giving blood takes only one hour of your time and it can help save the lives of three people

    • A donation of 470 ml of blood is less than 10% of your total blood volume

    • Your body keeps discarding and replenishing blood all the time whether you give blood or not – so you may as well put that ‘spare’ blood to good use and help save up to three lives as you do it

If you need a reason to donate, take the time to read Ivy’s special story and how just an hour of your time can change her life, and the lives of so many others.

Please visit the Australian Red Cross Blood service to see if you are suitable to be a Blood donor and find your nearest Donor Centre.

Many people don’t realise that, for a multitude of reasons, a significant percentage of our population is not eligible to give blood. This makes it all the more important to find out if you’re eligible, and make the time to donate if you can.

I’ve found it to be a positive experience, and I’m grateful to Leigh for reminding me that my next donation is overdue!

    101 Update

    Elizabeth September 8th, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve updated about my progress on my 101 Things in 1001 Days project. It’s been coming along really nicely, although not at the rate that I’d like!

I have completed 51 items so far, with a little over a year to go. This means that in order to finish my list, I need to be completing one per week. That’s starting to look a little bit scary!

I’m taking a few days off work in a couple of weeks, mostly to be at home while my pup recovers from surgery. Today I decided to take a good look at my list and see what uncompleted items I can tackle while I’m at home.

    Here’s a few contenders:

    001. Weight loss goal #1
The weather has started to get warmer, the days are getting longer, and it’s time to start getting my butt into gear. I’m planning to use this opportunity to restart the Couch to 5k running program. Time to put a dent in this!

    005. Learn 15 new vegetarian recipes (10/15)
Only 5 to go! I’m sure I can knock out a couple more during that time, especially as I’ll be stuck at home. It will be nice to take my time and enjoy cooking.

    008. Learn to cook a recipe from 30 different countries (12/30)
Maybe I can combine some of these with the item above it. Two birds, one stone!

    012. Go for three 2-hour bike rides (1/3)
I plan to do at least one long ride this month.

    016. Write a budget
    This is largely underway, but it would be nice to tick it off properly. And as part of this;

    017. Set a savings target, meet it, and maintain it for 6 months.
    See above.

    020. See 25 movies of Tim’s choosing (14/25)
This is the perfect task for my days off!

    024. Read the dictionary from beginning to end (Now Reading: “D”)
I powered through the first few letters, then stopped. This really shouldn’t take too long!

    040. Read 10 novels by Melbourne authors (6/10)
Now Reading: “The Slap” – Christos Tsiolkas

Anything I read during this time will go towards my list.

    072. Have my couches dry-cleaned
This is difficult to arrange during the working week, so I need to remember to book a cleaner for my days off.

    087. Make a photography book
    I’m making good progress here!

That’s plenty for the time being, although there are other items on my list that I could tackle if I find I have more time. I’m looking forward to knocking some more tasks off my list, and updating you properly on the ones that I’ve already achieved lately!

In the meantime, check out my progress on 100 Snapshots. I’m really enjoying putting this together!

    Harry’s Song

    Elizabeth September 6th, 2009

There are certain sounds that are guaranteed to make my dog howl. Any sort of woodwind instrument will do it, as will repeated high notes on the piano. And, of course, the word “sing”.

This morning I recorded him singing, thinking it would make for a funny blog post. However, it got a whole lot funnier when I played it back on my phone…

    I love that weirdo ♥
