It probably goes without saying that this is one of the more immature tasks on my list of 101 Things in 1001 Days, and that’s why I’ve been looking forward to it so much!  Let’s face it, I’m never going to write the book on How to Adult.  Sometimes blanket forts just make sense.

It was Tim’s birthday last week (hooray!) and for weeks I worried about what sort of present to get him.  Eventually I realised that he doesn’t really need anything, and he hadn’t mentioned anything lately that he really wanted.  Plus we’re about to go overseas and so we’re being a bit more careful with our cash right now.

I decided it was time to tackle item #66 and build a fort to commemorate his big day.  But it couldn’t be just any old fort – it needed cathedral ceilings, coordinated soft furnishings, ample storage and a full entertainment system.  It was also going to need supplies – board games, midnight snacks, new pajamas, reading material, mood lighting and a designated spot for the puppy so that he wasn’t on the bed.

Oh… and a tunnel, obviously.

The dog was almost never on the bed.  But you can’t be good all the time in Fort Birthday.

In summary: everybody should do this!  As a grown-up, I mean.

It’s incredible how quickly the time passes when you’re doing absolutely nothing.  We stayed up late, slept until 10am, and had all our favourite stuff at our fingertips.  We rented a movie on Apple TV, surfed YouTube together and listened to some seriously good music.  We talked.  We snuggled.  We ate food that was terrible for us and didn’t care because in Fort Birthday?  No calories.  I don’t really have time to go into the science behind that but I can assure you that it’s true.

Best of all I got to spend heaps and heaps of time with my most favourite person on the planet.  I got to kiss his birthday face and squeeze his birthday butt.  It was pretty great to have the weekend to just hang out and be awesome together.

He might be another year older, but luckily for me he’s still a big kid.

Happy birthday, favourite boy! xxx
